Design/Symmetry Graphics
I started out my artistic journey like most do, with drawing and painting. When I was young I was sure I was going to end up doing art in that vein for the rest of my life, maybe doing illustrations, or being a painter. As I grew and realized that there were more options, more materials, more paths to take, I found a love for sculpture and left behind the 2D arts accept for when I would sketch out ideas. Over the last few years I have returned to the 2D arts, materials and processes and found that they give me a new and exciting creative outlet.
This gallery is full of "Paintings." I start with doodles or small icons or drawings that I combine into graphic sketches, simple, black and white line drawings. Then I put them through the process of duplication and symmetry that creates a larger design. I transfer that line drawing onto the final material, some paper from Bristol to Yupo, wood, gessoed panel or what ever material I choose to work on, even old records. Once the design is laid out on the material, I use Posca acrylic paint markers to "Paint" in the design, adding color and detail paying particular attention to the creation of shapes, negative/positive space and line work. The materials, color pallets, and designs come together to create symmetrical designs that evoke detailed tiles, different arts movements, textiles and other forms of art. I see them as a works in themselves but also beginnings as many could go on to be anything from album covers to wearable designs and textiles to graphics for printed materials. It has been a fun and interesting creative investigation that I plan on continuing for a long time.
