Collaborations
It has been my honor to have the chance to collaborate with different artists over the years. Having the chance to react to their work, watch as they react to mine and blend out unique points of view and skills into the creation of completely new and unique work is an experience I hope to enjoy with many artists in the future.
The chair is an icon embedded with years of history, a throne, support, and a structure for comfort, and an icon for a traditionally male persona. Virginia Cassetta, Yolanda Daliz and myself started the “Layers” collaboration with discarded and/or broken chairs. A narrative began and was added to when each artist created a response to the others imagery, materials, or extension of thought. This process transformed the chairs into something new, creating a new female identity for an ancient icon.
The images below are shown in the order that they were created and are only a selection of the whole body of work created during this collaboration.

By ChoiceThis video was created in 2004 in collaboration with Greta Spittler. After a day spent browsing through books, we found a handbook from the 50's that had instructions for women on how they must behave in the work place. We found the instructions to be almost comical in that they were ridiculous degrading, sexist and just plain horrible. With that as our inspiration, we but together a video playing off the idea that society tells us what sort of behavior is appropriate in certain situations. We decided to focus on the fact that it isn't only men that try to control us, but women as well. Women are our teachers, our guides as we grow up and make our way from our mothers and grandmothers to our mentors and friends. But even though they are women, they are telling us how to act, how to dress and how to be, usually reinforcing the same outdated, damaging and sexist ideas that they were taught. We can only hope that someday that cycle will be broken.
